Eighteen Central Coast companies are getting some national attention. Inc. Magazine has named them as some of the fastest growing businesses in the country.
SMS Masterminds in San Luis Obispo is number 731 on the Inc. 5000 list.
“(I) have always been in the tech business, always been a web guy, owned one of the first web design companies in San Luis County back in the mid 90s,” said Alex Minicucci, SMS Masterminds founder.
The company focuses on mobile marketing. One of its products is called a Loyalty Rewards Kiosk, which essentially replaces the typical loyalty cards you get from stores with a text-based rewards program. More than 1 million customers have used the technology, and it’s been licensed to more than 60 businesses in 30 states. The company has also grown by 10% every month over the last year.
San Luis Obispo County officials say growing businesses, like SMS Masterminds, are good for the county.
“Nothing provides the revenue better than having people who are working in well-paid jobs, who have families, who have houses, who shop here and do everything here, and the multiplier effect is enormous,” said County Supervisor Adam Hill.
Minicucci says the secret is hard work and dedication; however, even one of the Central Coast’s fastest growing businesses has to slow down every once in a while.
“It’s a fun office,” he said. “Sitting at a computer all day long is, I think, physically the worst thing a human being can do all day, so we encourage everybody to get up, move around a little bit, and bond as a team.”
Other San Luis Obispo companies to make the list are MindBody (#1360), iFixit (#1735), TekTegrity (#2131), Meathead Movers (#2605), and Shopatron (#3402).
IQMS, based in Paso Robles, made the list for the third year in a row. The company’s ranking on the list (#3230) is 600 spots higher than last year.
Eleven businesses in Santa Barbara are also on the list: Planet Solar (#434), ONTRAPORT (#603), Fast Spring (#642), Pensionmark Retirement Group (#826), Procore Technologies (#1335), Metro Solutions (#2004), Invenios (#2088), Data Hardware Depot (#2518), Tempest Telecom Solutions (#3076), Beneflex Insurance Services (#3317), and Star Media Network (#4761).
The 2013 Inc. 5000 List measures revenue growth from 2009 through 2012. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2009.
The magazine will recognize this year’s honorees at an event in October held in Washington, D.C.
